Recent Alarms

    March 20 - Engine 141, Chief 41 & Chief 2 responded to an crash with unknown injuries in South Middleton Township at the intersection of Trindle Rd & Valley St. The crash involved two vehicles with two patients transported to the hospital. Engine 141’s crew assisted with patient care and scene clean up.






    March 14 - Afternoon crews from Union, Mount Holly, and Monroe Fire Departments responded to a structure fire on Trindle Road. The crew from Engine 141 knocked down the fire on Side A using the foam line. Engine 36 laid 5" line from the hydrant. Upon arrival, Truck 36 approached Side A of the building and various equiment was used, including ground ladders and a positive pressure fan.

    February 2 - At 13:00 hours Crews were dispatched for a house fire in the 200 block of Lincoln Street. Engines 45, 41, 38, 36, Trucks 45 and 39 responded. Engine 241, Utility 41, and Chief 241 responded on the call with a total of 8 personnel. Chief 241 arrived on the scene and established command. Engine 241 dropped a supply line and pulled in behind Truck 45 on Side A. Can Man Steve Whistler was first in, finding a working fire on the second floor. He held the fire in the stairwell with a PWC. Chief 341 advanced upstairs with the lineman from Engine 241 and took Division 2 Supervisor. The Whistler then pushed down the hallway and knocked down the bulk of the fire with the PWC. The lineman from Engine 241 finished putting out the hot spots and mopped up. Crews from 41 and 36 completed the primary and secondary searches, finding no one inside. Crews from 38, 39 and 45 found minor extension in the cockloft. Crews then overhauled. The scene was turned over to the Cumberland County Housing Authority and the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshall.


    March 1 - At 09:49hrs, a hazardous materials incident was dispatched on Mulberry Avenue in Carlisle Borough. Engines 141 and 241 responded. Police were serving a search warrant when they encountered what they suspected to be a meth lab. Team 200 was dispatched. The chemical was later determined to be rat poison. Lt.341, Rob Smiley, had command 3 and did a great job.


    February 25 - At 12:52 hours, Engine 241 responded to a chimney fire on North Hanover Street in Carlisle Borough. Engine 241's aerial device was used to access the roof.


    February 22 - At 07:50 hours, Engine 141 and Chief 341 responded to a crash on York Road at Interstate 81 in South Middleton Township. The Engine crew used the Amkus tool to open a door.


    February 17 - At 18:19 hours, Engine 241 and Tanker 41 were dispatched to a basement fire on Pine Road in Dickinson Township. Company 41 was placed available upon arrival.


    February 16 - At 08:19 hours, Engine 141 transferred to Station 47 (Newville) while they were at a house fire in Hopewell Township.


    February 16 - Engine 141, Tanker 41, and Utility 41 responded to a house fire in Monroe Township to the White Rock Acres development. Chiefs 241 & 341 and 3 additional personnel also went to the scene. The station was covered by Engine Company 48, Chief 141 and Steve Whistler. Click here to view pictures.


    January 24 - A male driver lost control of his Ford F-150 on Route 11. His vehicle traveled up an embankment, rolled and came to rest in a clearing. Engine 241 responded.





    January 8 - At 14:25 hours, Companies 41 & 45 were dispatched to a vehicle accident in the Boro of Carlisle at the intersection of South Hanover Street and Noble Boulevard. Engine 141 responded with 6 personnel including Chief 241. Chief 341 arrived on scene with 1 additional. The accident involved 2 cars with 4 Class III patients still in the vehicles. Engine 141's crew assisted the patients in the Subaru, and Rescue 45's crew assisted the patient in the Mazda. After the patients were packaged and loaded, the crews cleaned up and cleared the scene at 14:55 hours. Station 41 was staffed with 5 personnel for the second engine.





    January 4 - On Wednesday January 4, at 01:48 hours Companies 41, 45, 36, 46, 39 were dispatched to the Borough of Carlisle on West North Street for a house fire. Upon arrival of Engine 241 with 7 personnel, there was smoke showing but quickly investigated and found a small fire on the kitchen table. Once it was determined there was no extension Command 3 held Borough units.


    January 2 - At 13:31 hours Companies 41, 36, 45 were dispatched to South Middleton Township on York Road at W100 radio station for a basement fire. Chief 41 arrived on scene first reporting smoke showing from sides A & B. He also reported that on Side D fire showing from Division 1 center part of the structure. Engine 241 responded with crew of 6 who deployed three handlines with Class A foam, with two lines in the front of the structure and one to Side D. It was found that the fire was on Division 1 and not in the basement. Crews made a quick know down but had a lot of overhaul since intense heat and smoke damage traveled the entire 2.5 story structure. The State Police Fire marshal was called to the scene to determine the cause which does not seem to be malicious in nature. Additional companies were called in for manpower as well as transfers.     January 2 - At 10:02 hours Companies 41, 45, 36, 38, 39 were dispatched to South Hanover Street for a Kitchen Fire. Upon arrival, they found fire to be primarily contained to the oven. The fire was under control within 5 minutes and ventilation was started while the box was held to Borough units. Engine 241 responded with a crew of six, including Chief 241. Chief 3A (Dave Weaver) also responded on the call while others went to the station to man second engine. Good job by all.


    December 28 - At 18:15 hours, Engine 241, Tanker 41 and Chiefs 41, 241 and 341 responded to South Middlesex Road in South Middleton Township for a house fire. The engine crew stretched a hand line to the second floor. After a brief search they discovered a bedroom fire. The Engine operator had the aerial to the roof for possible ventilation.




    December 27 - Engine 241 and Chief 41 responded to D Street in Carlisle for an oven fire at 15:28 hours.


    December 24 - Engine 141 transferred to Company 54 at 07:19 hours.


    December 22 - At 22:00 hours, Engine 141 responded to a Crash involving a school bus and a car at the intersection of North and Hanover Streets in Carlisle Borough. There were no students on board.

    December 10 - At 14:39 hours, crews responded to a chimney fire on Shirley Avenue in Carlisle Borough with Engine 241, Chiefs 41 and 241.


    December 9 - Crews were dispatched at 00:13 hours to Hillcrest Drive, South Middleton Township for an overheated baseboard heater. Engine 241 laid in and deployed handline. Chiefs 41 and 341 also responded.


    December 2 - At 14:30 hours, Brush 41 and Chief 341 responded to assist Company 50 with a trash fire on Stonehouse Road in Dickinson Township. A resident was burning tires, rolls of carpet, furniture and other trash.


    November 28 - At 00:58 hours, Engine 141 and Chief 341 transferred to Station 52 while they were at a barn fire in Hopewell Township.


    November 22 - Dispatched at 17:27 hours to South Middleton Township on the Holly Pike at Midway Bowling, Engine 141 responded for crash requiring dual extrication and provided fire protection. Chief 241 manned station 41 during the incident.


    November 19 - The Union Fire Company and Carlisle Fire and Rescue Services responded to a car fire in the parking lot of Walmart off Noble Boulevard. Upon arrival crews found a Ford Explorer fully involved. A 150' of 1 3/4" Class A foam line was deployed. There was a 2 gallon gas can in the rear that ignited during extinguishments that caused a slight flare up but was contained very quickly. Engine 141 responded with four personnel, with Chief Weaver having command in Car 1. Engine 145's personnel assisted Union's crew. Video can be viewed here.


    November 15 - At 17:37 hours, UFC responded to South Spring Garden Street in South Middleton Township for a van fire in the woods with Engine 141, Chiefs 141 and 241.


    November 13 - At 17:08 hours, Tanker 41 responded for a tractor trailer fire to Interstate 81 at Exit 52 in Middlesex Township. The cab was well involved. Seven personnel were on station for standby. Photos can be viewed on Company 36's website.


    November 13 - Tanker 41 responded for a chimney fire at 21:31 hours on Deer Lane, Monroe Township. Three personnel were on station for standby.


    November 1 - Tanker 41 responded for a chimney fire on Criswell Drive in Monroe Township at 12:54 hours.


    November 1 - Tanker 41 responded for a chimney fire at 00:19 hours on Myerstown Road in Dickinson Township.


    October 30 - At 06:29 hours, Engine 141 and Tanker 41 responded with 8 personnel to Whiskey Spring Road in South Middleton Township for a working house fire. Snow caused significant access issues as trees were blocking several roads. Photos can be viewed on Company 36's website.


    October 29 - It was a busy weekend at the Union caused by a freak snowstorm with massive power outages. UFC ran about twenty calls on Saturday and about seven calls on Sunday with one dozen personnel assisted.


    October 28 - Tanker 41 responded at 19:26 hours to North Locust Point Road in Silver Spring Township to assist with a structure fire involving a garage attached to a house. Two personnel on tanker and six on standby at station.


    October 24 - Union was dispatched at 15:19 hours to Interstate 81N at Exit 48 for an auto accident with entrapment. Engine 141, Chiefs 241 and 341 responded. Engine provided blocking and assisted with extrication from a rolled over vehicle.


    October 22 - Engine 241 was dispatched at 20:42 hours for an odor of gas inside a structure on North Hanover Street in Carlisle Borough. Crews investigated and discovered a cooking fire.


    October 17 - The Union was dispatched at 08:15 hours. Engine 241 and Chief 141 responded to Brookwood Avenue in South Middleton Township, Giant Food offices, for a fire in the electrical room.


    October 9 - Crews were dispatched at 11:46 hours to East North Street in Carlisle Borough for a structure fire. Engine 141 and Chief 141 responded to find food on the stove.


    October 7 - Crews were dispatched at 23:53 hours to North West Street in Carlisle Borough for a Structure Fire. Engine 141, Chiefs 41 and 341 responded for a space heater fire.


    October 5 - Crews were dispatched at 21:28 hours to Forge Road in South Middleton Township for Power lines down on fire endangering a residence. Engine 141 was clearing from a crash and was first on scene, laying in from a hydrant. The crew, Chief 341 and 8 firefighters, stretched a line and checked house for extension.


    September 1 - Engine 241 and Chief 341 responded to East Street in Mount Holly Springs Borough late Thursday evening for a reported apartment building fire. The fire damaged a bedroom in a townhouse unit. E241 crews assisted in checking exposures as the source of the fire was not found for an extended period of time. The crew then assisted in overhaul operations.


    July 1 - Crews were dispatched to a suspected porch fire on South Hanover Street. While en route, Headquarters advised that it was an apartment fire with smoke showing. Engine 241 laid a line from South Street to Hanover Street. Crews pulled two attack lines and found the fire to be in the kitchen. Firefighters attacked the fire from the exterior, while another crew tried to gain interior access to the apartment. Lieutenant Whistler and Firefighter Deckman checked for extension and found nothing. Crews set up ventilation to clear the smoke from the apartment. Salvage and overhaul was completed and crews return to quarters.


    April 28 - Busy afternoon at the Union. 12:38hrs dispatched for truck brakes on fire in the 200 block of North Hanover Street. Upon returning to station a citizen ran into the station reporting a fuel leak from a vehicle at 65 West Louther Street. At 13:41hrs we were dispatched to 1341 Ritner Highway for a automatic fire alarm in Building 11.


    April 27 - Engine 241 and Tanker 41 responded to a barn fire at 2744 Ritner Highway in Dickinson Township. Engine 241 positioned on side B and Truck 45 positioned on side D. The crew from Engine 247 took a handline to division 1, while the Engine 241 crew made an initial exterior attack on side B before heading to the lower interior level. The crew then accessed the roof with the aerial ladder to perform extensive overhaul. Engine 141 was covered at station during the incident.


    April 24 - While crews were completing their Sunday morning clean up, a citizen walked up to the station to report he had a "hot" smell next door to the fire house at the Sadler building at 100 North Hanover Street and wanted us to investigate what might be causing the smell. Engine 241 proceeded next door with a crew of 8 to check it out. While investigating, they discovered an odor of smoke coming from the HVAC vents. The assignment was upgraded to a box alarm. Engine 241's driver proceeded to the intersection of North Hanover and West Louther Streets, dropped a line from the hydrant and made his way around to Side C of the building. The FDC was hit, an attack line was pulled and staged at the entrance, and the aerial of Engine 241 was deployed to the roof. Engine 145 picked up Engine 241’s supply line and covered the hydrant while Truck 45 took Side B. Truck 45 also employed its ladder on Side B. Engines 138, 136 and Truck 39 staged on Side A of the building. After investigating, it was determined to be an HVAC unit on the roof and the assignment was scaled back. As units were clearing, an alarm was dispatched for Engine 241, Engine 145, and Truck 39 to Comfort Suites for an automatic fire alarm. Engine 145 and Truck 39 took positions on Side A while Engine 241 arrived and took Side C with nothing evident. It was determined that the alarm was activated by a water surge in the sprinkler system. All units went available to continue with their Easter Sunday.


    April 19, 20, 21 - Tanker 41 was requested to transfer to Harrisburg City Fire Department Station 2 to provide water supply during the water main break incident. Rugh and Bouch took shifts driving and Smiley assisted. The tanker was due on all structure calls and ran about six alarms while on duty. Response from Station 2 in order was Tower 1, Wagon 4, Perry Tanker 2 and Cumberland Tanker 41. The Harrisburg Firefighters treated us well and fed us plenty.


    February 17 - UFC responded to a house fire on Pine Road at 02:40. Companies 41, 50, 36, 47, 45 were dispatched to Dickinson Township. Engine 141 responded with 5, Tanker 41 responded with 2. Four responded to the scene (thanks to Air 45 for picking up Jodi). Upon arrival Engine 141 took side Charlie with fire showing from the roof on the Delta side. Tanker 41 supplied Engine 141. Crews pulled two class A 1-3/4" attack lines and proceeded into the rear. An evacuation was called since the fire was running the roof and attic quicker than the crews could pull ceilings to get to it. Once the fire was deemed under control crews proceeded back in to complete extinguishments and overhaul. All occupants got out safely, and no firefighter injuries were reported at the time of this post. February 21 - Captain Micah Dewhurst and Firefighter Josh Martin were presented with the Liberty Mutual Firemark Award for Heriosm at the Tuesday evening training session. Captain Dewhurst and Firefighter Martin rescued a Carlisle man from a burning apartment on January 25, 2012.

September 25 - The Union Fire Company and the Red Knights Motorcycle Club participated in a benefit ride for Blake Lawrence.

August 30 - About a dozen members traveled to Kane, PA for the Central District Volunteer Firemans Association Convention. An awards ceremony was held on Friday morning. Amy Myers was presented with the 2011 Robert E. Kerns Fire Prevention award. Union Fire Company won 5th place over all for its Fire Prevention program, including $50.00 and plaque. Rick Jacoby recieved a plaque upon returning the roving Kerns Award trophy from 2010. Scholarships awarded: Christine Otto $150.00; Karinda Lloyd $250.00; Brady Weaver $300.00; Kortnie Rugh $150.00.

April 24 - The Union Fire Company celebrated its 222nd Anniversary with an open house and memorial ceremony.

April 10 - Union Fire Company members attended the church services at the First Presbyterian Church, Carlisle. This is an annual event that is held around the our aniversary (April 6th) in tribute to the organizers of our fire company. Numerous organizers were members of the First Presbyterian Church.

March 5 - The Union Fire Company was featured in Firehouse Magazine's first Combination Fire Department Run Survey, featuring statistics on apparatus fleets, budgets, membership, and 2010 fire and EMS calls.

February 5 - We will mark a record breaking fire company banquet if all show up that are signed up. We currently have 193 signed up to attend the annual awards banquet with several distingquished quests who have responded.

February 4 - New Utility Update: striping is almost done. It will be leaving Monday, February 7 to have the radio's and lighting installed by B. Moyer Communications. We hope to have it back by the end of the week. We have the training sheets and drivers test ready to go upon return. Our hopes are to have it in service by mid-February. We are still accepting bids on the old Utility. Please see the add on the link to the left for details.

January 26 - With the help of Steve Whistler and Brian Brenneman, we now have new can (recessed) lights in the dayroom on a dimmer switch. They also installed motion sensors for certain rows of lighting in the engine bay. This will help for night calls when the bay is dark; they automatically come on to provide safe maneuvering to don gear and board apparatus. There's a lot of positive buzz around the firehouse!

January 25 - February Training will focus on Arson Awareness for the Emergency Response Personnel by instructor Mike Rugh. It will be held February 15, 2011 at Station 45. Class begins at 18:30.
